Kentucky Coffee Tree. A rare and very beautiful, slow growing, deciduous tree. Mid green pinnate leaves cast a dappled shade and are pink tinged when young turning yellow in autumn. Rarely flowers in the UK but when it does it has large panicles of greenish white flowers followed by long seed pods. Attractive white bloom on the young stems is most notable in winter. Drought tolerant once established and grows in any fertile free draining soil. Height and spread to around 10m x 8m. The seeds were roasted, crushed and used as a coffee substitute by the early settlers in North America and are thought to be poisonous if not roasted first.
