Chinese liquorice. An unusual perennial most commonly grown for it's roots that contain glycyrrhizin which is 50 times sweeter than sugar and is used to make liquorice, and many medicines! However from the plantsmans point of view it grows 2-3ft tall (60-90cm) has glossy green lobed leaves with lilac/pink flowers in summer followed by the most beautiful seed pods that remain on the plant into winter. A rare and special plant for the middle of the border. If growing for the roots grow in a herb bed and do not allow it to set seed. Hardy to -10c.
