Unusual birch native to the Caucasus, introduced to Kew in 1897 grows as a broad spreading multistemmed shrub that is usually wider than it is tall. Height and spread to around 5m x 8m. Alder like leaves turn golden yellow in autumn. Very attractive in winter with its grey/brown bark and large buds. Any soil that is not too boggy in sun or light shade.
