Spiny rosettes of grey green foliage. Upright habit with tall flower stems in summer holding broad heads of cone shaped reddish brown thistle flowers to 1.4m. Poor to moderately fertile, well drained soil in sun. Hardy but must be well drained as it resents winter wet. Good for flower arranging.
