Meet our Team

Edward Cannon - Head Plantsman

A self-confessed plant addict I took over Langthorns Plantery from my parents in January 2001. I have always had a keen interest in horticulture growing up on the Plantery with passionate gardening parents and grandparents.

Having gained an HND in amenity horticulture and business studies from Cannington College and worked in wholesale nurseries in Holland and Hampshire I took up a position as Head Gardener to West Wratting Park near Cambridge. I trained as a tree surgeon whilst there and did some freelance tree surgery and garden design/advice before starting at Langthorns in January 2000.

I find Langthorns the perfect place to feed my addiction to plants and share my enthusiasm with our customers.

Simon  - Mail Order and Shrubs as well as the longest serving member of staff!

Working at Langthorns combines my love of the outdoors with my huge experience in customer service.  Over the past 16 years, I have really enjoyed helping gardeners to find their ideal plants.
I love to spend time walking in the countryside and enjoying the scenery and Langhtorns is a beautiful location and place to work on a Summers day.
Unlike my fair-weather work colleagues, I am commited to wearing shorts 365 days a year

Hamish - General Manager

I love all different aspects of gardening and horticulture and am a recently graduated Horticulturist.

I have been working at Langthorns for a year and am very excited to be putting my years of education and experience in landscape gardening and design into helping and advising customers on which plants to choose to specifically meet the conditions of their garden.

I have a real passion for being outside and in the countryside and I love to get stuck in with the maintenance of the grounds and of all the perennial borders.

Rebecca - Herbaceous Manager

Heading the Herbaceous team at Langthorns is an absolute pleasure! I really enjoy working with all our team members.  I have gained a real wealth of knowledge working here and continue to do so.  Looking after plants every day is absolutely fascinating, and I genuinely believe if you want to get into gardening, the best way to do it is through experience.  Every mistake you make, you will learn.  And every success is even better!

I must admit I am a bit of a shopaholic, and if you are like me, you will find it hard to drag yourself away from this place! There are just too many beauties! And there is ALWAYS more space in the garden . . .you just might need to take out some more of that lawn!  I look forward to seeing you soon!

Hannah - Social Media and Herbaceous team member

I joined the team here at Langthorns in 2021, during which I completed a year's course in Horticulture and Design at Writtle College.

My greatest love is my collection of cacti and succulents with a few of my favourites being Agave Victoria Regina's, Sedum morganianum 'Burrito' and Echinocactus grusonii (barrel cactus).

I don't yet have my own garden, but I have a very productive allotment providing me with lots of cut flowers and plenty of runner beans alongside other veg in the summer!

Sophie - Chief flower Arranger and Plantery team member

I started working for Ed at Langthorns about a year and a half ago after a period of time being a volunteer and I am loving it!

I am a novice to horticulture after spending my working life thus far as a stylist and florist, using plants and flowers to create theatre at high end events.

Langthorns Plantery is an amazing place full of the most incredible plants; many rare and unusual, and I learn not only from observing these plants, but also from my colleagues whose knowledge I am in awe of.  They are all being very patient teachers!

Peter - Chief of Shrub and Tree Potting and Shrub team member.

Having come to gardening as a hobby fairly late in life, there is so much to learn from Langthorns, whether it's from talking to colleagues, browsing the website or just reading the labels on the plants.

My own garden could be described as half cottage garden, half woodland, but having seen all that Langthorns has to offer I am tempted to introduce something a little more exotic!

Lou - Publicity Manager and Plantery team member

I started working at Langthorns over 10 years ago when I decided to ditch the office politics and work in the great outdoors.  I studied at Writtle college gaining my RHS qualifications and now I like to combine my love of plants and creative eye by keeping one hand still on the marketing chair here at Langthorns!  I run my own gardening business, but Langthorns always keeps a place in my heart and my diary so I am now part of the part-time team from March until November.  Plus I have an obsession with all things plants, and tend to take one or two things  home with me on a regular basis!

Grant - Chief of Rose Maintenance and Plantery team member.

Charlie - Very part-time team member but super helpful. Catch her if you can!

Coming up to 30 years of working and training in horticulture and still not losing enthusiasm (or maybe just a bit for digging out the ivy on the new pond beds!).  I enjoy working part-time with the friendly and knowledgeable team here at Langthorns surrounded by an immense range of plants.

I am RHS Wisley trained and have spent most of my career working in private gardens.  I like to think that all the gardens I develop fit comfortably into their environments, are fun and interesting, client specific, wildlife friendly, organic and productive.  At langthorns we constantly strive to reduce any negative environmental impact and are very proud of our peat-free growing.

Dan - Plantery team member

I worked at Langthorns in both part-time and full-time roles from 2003-2012, but took a career change to tree surgery and then teaching in Geography!  I am now happy to be back as a part-time team member for the summer of 2025!

The broad range of skills I have gained in my varied job roles means I can be very helpful in all areas of the plantery.

Kyle - Plantery Assistant with the part-time team
