Castanea sativa (1.2-1.5m b/r)

Overview

Sweet chestnut. Vigorous broadly columnar tree with lanceolate, toothed glossy green leaves that turn yellow before dropping in the Autumn. Long green/yellow catkins in may and june followed by prickly seed cases containing delicious dark brown chestnuts in Autumn. Height and spread to around 20m x 12m. Best on lime free soil.
