Akebia x pentaphylla (3lt)
A rare form of the chocolate vine with vanilla scented purple flowers in April and May. These are followed by curious mini baguette shaped green fruits generally in hands of 3 to 5 that ripen to a bright purple blue colour and pop open to reveal a white interior with seeds encased in an edible jelly that tastes similar to a melon. Fruits only rarely appear. Try planting with other akebias to increase chances of fruit. Male and female flowers appear on the same plant but pollination does not occur without the aid of inscets or a brush! A twining and unusual climber. Moist humus rich soil in shade or part shade.
